SHAWNEE MISSION PARK – SHELTER #2 (Shawnee)

This is the 3rd and final SMP playground I’ve documented (see my other posts re: shelter #8 and the inclusive playground.) There are several pirate ships around, but this may be my favorite simply because of where it’s placed. Shelter 2 is pretty tucked away, and it’s just a beautiful, quiet spot. It’s awesome for toddlers (and no swings means maybe mom and dad can sit and relax while the kids play.) There are three slide variations, several different ladders, a fireman’s pole, a small tunnel, a steering wheel, treasure maps, plus a ramp for those who can’t do stairs. The nearby shelter has tons of seating and a large built-in fire pit. Among the plentiful open green space, one of the ponds also has a small “island” accessible by bridge with additional picnic tables and benches (and a fun geocache!)
Restrooms: one port-a-potty nearby, or you can walk a ways south for public restrooms
Parking: ample lot provided
Shade: lots of good morning shade
Grill: yes
Geocaches: two nearby, one of which is on the “island” and requires some climbing skills 😉
Nearest local coffee: before entering SMP, swing into @revocuplenexa on 87th for great coffee and friendly baristas.
