WATERFALL PARK | Shawnee Area Moms

There are so many awesome mom’s in the area! And I was fortunate to stumble across Kate’s Instagram @jocoparkmom! I absolutely love what she’s done through Covid to help other moms and keep her kids entertained!!

Meet Kate (@jocoparkmom)

I grew up in Olathe, but I’ve lived in Lenexa, Merriam and Overland Park. We live in North OP now, so we’re pretty central to all Johnson county parks. I have three kids under the age of 5 and became a SAHM a month before covid hit. Once the summer came, I had to get out of the house daily for my own sanity, but with everything shut down, parks were about our only low risk option. So, it became our morning routine – go explore a new park. I figured I may as well document it and share for any other moms wanting to see which parks were out there to explore. I then decided to highlight local coffee shops because I know how hard it’s been for small businesses the last year, and I wanted to help in whatever way I could. It’s been really fun and I love getting messages like “you’ve been my saving grace this spring break!” It’s crazy that I’ve documented over 40 parks and there are still SO many out there! We are blessed as a KC metro with so many fantastic and well kept options!

Here’s what Kate had to say about Waterfall Park located at 5191 Merriam Dr. Merriam

Waterfall Park in Merriam sits right next to Turkey Creek and overlooks a really pretty small waterfall. The playground has one structure, but it’s got a lot to offer, including a built-in sun shade, which does provide some good shade. There are multiple slides, all of which are accessible by stairs, so this is a really good option for toddlers. However, the climbing/balancing pieces and the very long monkey bars were enough to keep my 4 year old engaged for a long while. There are big and baby swings, a couple of musical features, a grill with several picnic tables, and a walking path. I will say because this is right next to I-35 and a railroad track, the traffic and occasional train does get pretty loud. However, if you’ve got a train fanatic, then maybe seeing one pass by so closely will make their day! There is a sign that says no swimming, bathing, or wading in the water.

Restrooms: seasonal port-a-potty only
Parking: large lot available
Shade: there is a built in sun shade, which covers much of the play structure
Grill: yes

Geocaches: there are two nearby (for premium members)

Nearest local coffee: check out @fillingstationcoffee on Johnson Drive, a converted auto garage with a very cool and open vibe.
