Mom-Owned Business, Tasty Treats KC! | Shawnee Area Moms

Shawnee Area Mom-Owned Business

I’m starting a new feature – Shawnee Area Mom-Owned Business ! For our first spotlight, meet Jennifer Joyce. She is the owner of Tasty Treats KC. I met Jennifer when she graciously offered to make some of the coolest (and delicious) cookies I’ve ever seen for our first Shawnee Area Moms event. (See picture to right)

How long have you lived in the Shawnee Area? Why did you choose to live here?

My family and I moved to Shawnee in 2013.  We first moved to the KC metro in 2008. We chose to live in Shawnee due to the hometown feel, while still having access to big city amenities.

How many children do you have and what are their age(s)?  I have 2 daughters:  12 & 9

What is your favorite part about motherhood?

My favorite part of motherhood is seeing my daughters grow and develop their own passions and interests that I get to play a part in cultivating.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

My career background is actually medicine.  Before starting my business, I was a Physician Assistant working mostly in the ER.

Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you with motherhood?

My mom was a great example of what a mother should be.  We are still best friends today, and I love that my parents live in Shawnee as well.

What is your favorite family activity in the Shawnee Area?

Shawnee Mission Park is a true gem where we enjoy taking walks, cycling and just enjoying the views at the lake as a family.

Tell us about your Mom-owned business…

My business is Tasty Treats KC.  I started it in late 2020 focusing on cookies and hot chocolate bombs.  I enjoy baking and sharing my passion for sweet and beautiful treats with others to make their special moments more delicious.  I bake out of my home and love that I get to interact directly with my customers.  Hearing how they’ve enjoyed their treats is extremely rewarding.

What made you want to become a Mompreneur?

Being a Mompreneur wasn’t really the intent, but I knew I had a passion and a talent for making desserts and sweet treats.  I regularly made treats for my daughters’ classes and for get-togethers with friends; and people really enjoyed them.  I’ve always loved being creative and now I get to share that with others through my Tasty Treats.

How do you juggle this venture, while being a mom?

It’s definitely difficult at times.  It often involves late nights decorating cookies and having the family eat in the living room at times, when a project has the dining table covered.  But, it has been educational for my girls to see all the “hats” required in running a small business:  creator, baker, decorator, webmaster, photographer, customer service, bookkeeper, etc.  I love that my girls get to see, in me, an example of someone using their gifts and passion to create a business.

Any advice for other mom’s thinking about starting a business?

Don’t be afraid to start! Just make sure you know your boundaries to keep balanced.  It’s easy to get sucked into the business and lose your focus on other key responsibilities.
